The Jemele Chronicles

I think it's become well known that I'm not the biggest Jemele Hill fan. I could write a whole blog ripping every column she writes and I bet it'd get more hits than this blog. But Hill's latest comments are unforgivable. Awful Announcing has the details.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Writers like Hill have been given a rare opportunity to put women in sports in a better position. What Hill is doing is reaffirming the reason why so many female sports writers aren't taken seriously.

Back from vacation...

...and here's what I missed.

Bob Knight is apparently sleeping in the ESPN studios. Seriously, every time I turned on the network last week, there was Bobby. I have to admit he's pretty good, and makes more sense than some of the other "analysts" they're using (the Sklar brothers? really?).

Yes, I know he's one of the best college players right now, but I'm already tired of Tyler Hansbrough. First, UNC announces they're retiring his jersey while he's still playing and hasn't won any major titles, but then he knocks my Hokies out of the SEC game, and the tournament, with a buzzer beating two. But personal feelings aside, the jersey retiring announcement is completely inappropriate and frivolous. If UNC gets knocked out of the tourney in the first round, will they take it back?

With a big "fuck you" to the media, Houston is on a 22 game bender without Yao. This just shows how much unnecessary stock teams and fans put into one player. Sure, he's great. But it's a team for a reason.

David Beckham wants out of his contract in the US to go back to Europe. After signing a $250 million contract and then being injured most of the season, where does this fall on the "What a pussy" scale? And let that be a lesson learned for MLS, and all the leagues in general. You can't build a sport around one guy. Especially one who is more famous for his off field persona than his on field prowess.

Couldn't resist...

I know I'm supposed to be on vacation, but I couldn't resist a few spring training comments.

First, Billy Crystal playing an exhibition game with the Yankees is the dumbest publicity stunt I've seen in years. What is the point of this? When was the last time Billy Crystal was relevant? And did anyone ask Kevin Youkilis if he was ok with sharing his Baseball Jew title?

Second, the Yankees fight with Tampa Bay? Awesome. I love that they're showing some fire. Maybe Crystal can help out and make that fire last for eight nights.

So young

A 13 year-old from Brooklyn, Lia Neal, has qualified for the Olympic trials in swimming. Well hell. If you can swim in the East River, you can swim anywhere.

Breaking News!!!!!

Brett Favre is old!!

Seriously, I know he's one of the best quarterbacks to play the game, but everyone knew he was going to retire. The big story isn't his retirement, it's the younger generation of Packers fans who have known their team with only Favre at the helm. Few fans get to say that for their entire fandom, they had one guy under center every game for 15 years. The 20 to 30 year olds who now have to watch their team change in a huge way.

Not many of us know what that's like. Unlike other sports, a football team centers around one guy, the same guy, every game. Most of us adjust to a new QB every 5 years or so. These fans had one man for 15.

So here's to you, Packers fans. Drink your sorrows away and grieve your loss. The team owners, the players, and the media will all move on quickly. It's you, the fans, who are facing the biggest loss.

Here's to you.

So tell me...

Is this guy worth $102 million?
